overview

Baltimore is already known across the US for a few of our signature events, like Artscape and Light City, and we’re ready to add Hack Baltimore to that list. Our city is home to a wide variety of hackathons every year, each designed to solve a specific need. But what if we could collaborate to address a greater need? What if we could bring together Baltimore’s extensive and talented community and harness our resources to hack our city’s biggest problems? The Baltimore Hackathon will be a large-scale, city-wide event that taps into Charm City’s endless diversity and creativity to solve our toughest problems, because that’s what our city needs.

VISION

This won’t just be a reimagining of previous hackathons; we’re determined to do something bigger, better, and more effective. The Baltimore Hackathon will be a city-wide, 3-day event, and every issue we address will be Baltimore-based and focused on helping our community. But we know that we can’t pull this off without our community’s help, so we’re committed to getting every civic-focused non-profit, company, community associations, maker space, and government agencies in Baltimore on board with this event. We’ll do this by inviting all of these organizations to:

  • Pitch a problem that they face
  • Provide a space for the hackathon
  • Help fund prizes and cover operations costs
  • Pitch a problem that they face

Every hackathon is built around a simple, core idea: using technology to solve real-world problems. So how do we plan to collect and vet the problems that Baltimore hackers will try to solve? Sound like a challenge? We think our team and our city are up to the task. After all, you have to dream big to make a difference.

BACKGROUND

Baltimore is a unique and vibrant city, and though there are many reasons why we’re called “Charm City,” we tend to make the news for our flaws rather than our strengths. From drug overdoses to homelessness to homicide, there are many problems to be solved here. And hackathons are a great way to engage the broader community to explore technology as a way to help solve them.

implementation PLAN

The Baltimore Hackathon will be powered by a central platform where every civic-focused organization can submit a problem. Each problem will be vetted before being shared with the community, and those that are approved will be posted publicly within the platform. After their problem has been approved, the submitter will have the opportunity to post additional information, videos, and other artifacts to spark interest in their specific problem. Anyone who submits a problem must have a vested interest in seeing the project through to completion, so all submitters will be required to champion their project and actually use the solution that gets built. Because, while the Baltimore Hackathon itself may only last for a few days every year, our mission is to build sustainable solutions that have a lasting impact.

FUNDING

So, the big question: how do we fund such a big hackathon? Like most large-scale events, funding will largely be provided by sponsors. But we won’t stop there. We want this to be a community-centered and community-driven event, so individuals will also be able to donate money to a specific project that they care about. This will increase the prize money and encourage more techies to become involved in that project. By encouraging all Baltimoreans to get directly involved in the hackathon, whether by donating their money, their time, or their tech skills, the Baltimore Hackathon can get everyone – not just the tech community – invested in building a better future for Charm City.
